The Serbian-based Stefan Grand Prix team remains optimistic about its chances of gaining an entry to Formula 1, despite the final slot on the grid having been handed to Sauber.

Stefan GP has been in discussions with Toyota about taking over the design of its 2010 cars and leasing other elements of the former team, even though there is no F1 vacancy. It has also begun recruiting staff for its future plans.

In a statement issued by the team on Monday, Stefan GP said it was bullish about its chances of getting into the sport eventually.

“SGP Team is confident the FIA will eventually green-light [the] SGP team entry in [the] Formula 1 championship,” said the statement.

“However, SGP Team express satisfaction with [the] fact that Sauber’s entry in the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship has been successful. All at SGP congratulate Peter Sauber and [the] Sauber Formula 1 team.”

It added: “In the meantime, SGP is in process [of] hiring personnel for our operation.”

Stefan GP chief Zoran Stefanovich has held discussions with Toyota’s John Howett about utilising the remnants of the former Cologne outfit.
